In its joint board meeting on July 6, 2017, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Episcopal Commission on the Laity and the Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas (Council of the Laity of the Philippines) approved the admission of the Dominican Laity - Philippine Province as council member. The decision was reached through the recommendation of Bishop Honesto Ongtioco of Cubao, Bishop Antonio Tobias of Novaliches, Bishop Leopoldo Jaucian, SVD of Bangued (Abra), Archbishop Angel Lagdameo of Jaro (Iloilo), and Bishop Guillermo Afable of Digos (Davao del Sur).
The Sanggunian is a public association of the faithful erected by the CBCP in order to 'develop the consultation and collaboration of the lay faithful.'  It serves as the 'implementing office or arm of the Episcopal Commission on the Laity (ECLA), and collaborates with the other CBCP Commissions, Committees and Offices.' It is also affiliated with the Pontifical Council for the Laity. 
Dr. Belen L. Tangco, O.P., president of the Dominican Laity Provincial Council and Asia Pacific Coordinator for the International Council of Lay Dominican Fraternities (ICLDF) in Rome, expressed her gratitude to those who assisted her in obtaining the endorsement of the bishops in Visayas and Mindanao, particularly Sr. Maria Luz Mission, O.P., Rev. Fr. Paul Reagan Talavera, O.P. (Dominican Laity Region V), and Rev. Fr. Alfred Fernandez, O.P., Engr. Mary Beth M. Garay, OP and the Council of Mindanao (Dominican Laity Region VI).
The Sanggunian caucus on July 15, 2017 was attended by Ms. Jona Tabayoyong, O.P., while the National Convention was attended by Provincial Councillor Eulogia Arroyo, O.P. and Region V president, Atty. Edna B. Roa, O.P. with the Regional Council.
