He had been confined at Cardinal Santos Medical Center since May 9 due to pneumonia. He reportedly suffered mild stroke last week, while undergoing dialysis. He was 78.
Bishop Gregorio was born in Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija on September 25, 1939. He finished his studies (Bachelor's degree in Theology and Philosophy, and a Licentiate in Philosophy) at the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas in Manila. In 1965, he obtained his doctorate in Theology from the prestigious Dominican university in Rome, the Angelicum.
He was ordained to the Sacred Order of Presbyters in 1963, and was made Auxiliary Bishop of Cebu in 1987. In 1989, he was appointed Bishop of Bacolod, a post he served in until 2000. Three years later, he was made Bishop-Prelate of Batanes, serving until his retirement in May 2017.
In 2013, Bishop Gregorio celebrated the 50th anniversary of his priestly ordination at the Santisimo Rosario Parish Church, UST.
On October 1, 2017, he presided over the 75th Anniversary Thanksgiving Mass of Santisimo Rosario Parish. He was scheduled to preside over this year's Mass Confirmation (Kumpilang Bayan), which is part of the closing program for the Jubilee Year.
His remains will lie in state at Santo Domingo Church, Quezon City from May 22 to 25. He will be transferred to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Basco, Batanes on May 25, and will lie in state until his interment on May 28.
Let us include in our Mass and prayer intentions the repose of his soul.
Eternal rest grant unto your servant, Gregorio, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
