The Provincial Chapter is reflective of the democratic tradition of the Order of Preachers. When our holy father St. Dominic founded the first community, it was decided that they would govern themselves by openly tackling matters and making collective decisions in a meeting called a General Chapter. This is the highest authority within the Dominican Family whose legislations are binding upon the entire Order.
As the Order grew, it became impossible for every Dominican to attend this meeting. The Order decided to group Dominicans according to their geographical situation, and from these groups they created PROVINCES. Following the tradition they inherited from the first communities, the Provinces hold Provincial Chapters regularly, for the same purposes.
Meanwhile, the General Chapter, attended by representatives from all Provinces of the Order, continues to be regularly held and is presided over by the Master of the Order. The latest General Chapter was held between July and August this year in Bologna.
We pray that the wisdom and inspiration of the Holy Spirit may rest upon the Provincial Chapter. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, of whose Gospel and saving work the Dominican Family preaches, and who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.
Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us!
